When I was in 8th grade, I was on the all-star team for my age group for the Ventura Girls Basketball team. When I went to high school, there wasn't a team for me to play on, which caused great depression and arguments with my mother about being allowed to try out for the boy's team instead. However, the soccer coach needed a goalie, and heard about me and talked me into giving it a try. He said he needed a keeper, and a tall girl with good hands would do just nicely. He said it just like that too. Kind of creepy now that I think about it.
Anyway, I took to the game pretty well, and landed the starting spot on the Varsity team as a sophomore. I poked around for a potential scholarship for college, but I went to a really small school, and was too lazy to be aggressive enough, so I ended up at UC Santa Cruz playing what amounted to rec-level ball against mostly local community colleges rather than the mighty NCAA tourneys. Oh well.
After a 10 year hiatus, I got back into the sport again, playing with a great group of gals in the
Golden Gate Women's Soccer League on the Division 3
Blackthorn FC. Check me out in the loudest
goalie jersey in creation.
Additionally, in the past couple of years, I developed a love for good European Football (soccer to the ignorant), and have been following several teams. Since I'm not from any of these places, my criteria for finding teams to root for falls into a couple of categories:
